If you have points on your license, can you still become a police officer/ state trooper?

My boyfriend has 12 points on his license. All 12 are for speeding tickets. He's taken courses, paid his fines, and cleared all of the problems he had to deal with. It's been almost a year since he's even driven a car. He used to drive a street bike-- not a single ticket with that. He wants to go to school to become a police officer/ potentially a state trooper some day. Is it possible to do so with all of these points?
