Are rabid partisans hurting their own candidates campaigns?

I'm beginning to think that the McCain camp has instructed his supporters to do this--most of them have just recently joined Y/A's. They are all throwing heedless insults at Obama. They say nothing to build up their candidate. Even if I didn't know who to vote for, given the display of vitriol that I've seen on this site, I wouldn't vote for McCain.
