When a woman goes through menopause can her period stop all at once?

So my mom went to the doctor for a yeast infection and then after that never had a period again she thinks that the doctor did something to her to make it stop but when she called the doctor for answers they told her it must be menopause but my mom says that she has had a regular period from the time she started having them and do no think that it is that and that this is the first time that it has stopped. Well she keeps telling me about it and I don't know what to say to her. So what do you guys think. Oh and she is 48 years old by the way
